Codebooks & Data Collection Forms

Codebooks summarize all your data collection and coding rules. Professional codebooks for completed data collections may also include descriptive statistics in theirs; indeed, SPSS and Stata will generate ‘codebooks’ for you including tabulations if you have labeled all the values correctly.

Some basic resources on what goes in a codebook and how to create one:

The codebook as a tool for data organization

Penn Library’s comprehensive guide to data management is also valuable. It’s worth a browse for anyone needing to build a professional-grade dataset.
